formation

In Judge’n Play every player is also a judge. The idea of that gameformation comes from the Freestyle Frisbee Judging System. The Head judge , the organizer or one very advanced player, divides the players in pools and in the respective judging category. He levels the playing field.

There are (at least) 2 Pools at a time of at least 6players.
Two players judge one of three category together:

Human, Dog and Team. The Head judge helps the other judges while judging.
Moreover he controls possible judging variations.

The categorys are divided like that:

Human: In this category the ability and sporting prowess of the human gets judged.  This includes his dynamic, his throwing skills, the play for and with the dog and of cource the savety!

Dog:
In this part the judge’s  focus is on the dog. He looks at the agility and sportiness of the dog, ist drive and attention it what his human partner signals and in catching.

Team: Here The judge looks at the team of human and dog and how flewendly and smoove they play together.
More details about the content of the categorys you find in the valuation system

How to set the pools:

step 1: rank the players
the tournament director (TD) will get the players list
and will rank the players from the best team down to the last team.
this way the TD will get a list as:

1. best team
2.
3.
....
16. last team

step 2: create the pools
seed in the pool A the teams ranked with odd numbers (1,3,5...)
seed in the pool B the teams ranked with even numbers (2,4,6...)

it's allowed to switch 3 with 4, 5 with 6, (same level)
if there is some country/teams incompatibility
(ie TD don't want to have the same team fighting in the same pool or
having too much friendly judges like parents or girlfriends..)

it's not allowed to switch 3 with 6, 4 with 7 (different levels)

the playing order will be reverse as the list

(number 1 will play last in pool A, number 2 will play last in pool B)

step 3: set the judges

TD will set now the judges for pool A using players from pool B

and judges for pool B using players from pool A

it's good thing to set an experienced judge with a less experienced judge

for each category, that way the unexperienced can speak and learn from the experienced one.

step 4: set the cut

TD will set now the cut for getting the high final.

if you have 12 players (the lowest number of players to run a J&P in a safe mode)

TD will set the cut at 3rd place: that means the top 3 teams of each pool get the high finals.

Other examples:
14 players: cut at 3

16 players: cut at 3 or 4 (depending on the experience of the last teams)

18 players: cut at 4

20 players: cut at 5

step 5: run the first round!

pool A play first, pool B judges first

than pool B will play and pool A will judge

step 6: collect the results and seed the low final and high final

using the cut decision set the low finals seed as it follows:
first team to play is the last ranked in the pool B, than the last in pool A,

and so on, until you get the cut line.

then set the high finals seed the same way as up:
first team to play is the team just up of the cut in pool B than the team from pool A.

step 7: set the judges for low and high final and run the finals!

using the players on high finals set the judging panel for the low finals

then using the players of the low finals set the judging panel for the high finals

first to play is the low finals, than the high finals.
